United Utilities' adherence to ISO 45001 underscores a commitment to enhanced safety practices and continual improvement.
United Utilities, a pivotal player in water management with a workforce exceeding 5,000 and an extensive supply chain, proudly joins the ranks of organisations awarded the esteemed ISO 45001 certification. The accreditation, a testament to the company's unwavering dedication to occupational health and safety, validates their robust frameworks and signifies a step towards higher safety benchmarks.
Developed by an international panel of occupational health and safety authorities, ISO 45001 serves as the new gold standard, delineating an advanced framework that emphasises continuous improvement in operational systems and performance.
Replacing the former OHSAS 18001 standard, United Utilities' adoption of ISO 45001 reflects their proactive stance in aligning with cutting-edge health and safety practices. Paula Steer, the Director of Health, Safety, Wellbeing, and Estate Services at United Utilities, stressed the paramount importance of ensuring every employee returns safely home to their families at the close of each workday.
"This accreditation underscores our commitment to implementing best practices in our Occupational Health and Safety Management System. It's pivotal in reducing the likelihood of accidents and elevating our overall operational performance," affirmed Paula Steer.
Securing ISO 45001 involved comprehensive modifications to management systems and operational methodologies, aligning them with the stringent requisites of the new standard. Additionally, the attainment encompassed comprehensive training programs and educational initiatives for staff. The rigorous process included a robust independent audit, conducted over several days, focusing on adherence to the exacting standards mandated by ISO 45001.
Re-certification is slated every three years, supplemented by semiannual surveillance visits, ensuring the steadfast commitment of United Utilities to upholding unparalleled health and safety measures.
