The British Standards Institution (BSI) awards Ordnance Survey (OS) the ISO 14001 certification, underscoring the organisation's dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Ordnance Survey (OS), renowned for its mapping expertise, has achieved the prestigious ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System, as conferred by the British Standards Institution (BSI). This certification, granted to organisations' committed to environmental protection, signifies OS's adherence to stringent standards aimed at minimising harm, preventing pollution, and preparing for emergency situations.
Hazel Hendley, OS’s Director of People, expressed enthusiasm about the certification, emphasising its role as a robust framework to fulfil environmental and sustainability responsibilities. Hendley acknowledged the collective effort across the organisation, highlighting the engagement fostered by the Sustainability Steering and Working Groups, a newly established governance system featuring representatives from all levels of the company.
"This certification is a testament to OS's dedication to sustainability and the commitment of our people to make a positive impact," said Hendley, expressing confidence in OS's ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability outcomes.
The certification recognises OS's proactive steps toward sustainability integration into its decision-making processes. OS has embraced electric vehicles (EV) for company car users and elevated the value limit for its popular Cycle to Work scheme. Further enhancements to the BREEAM 'Excellent' rated Explorer House in Southampton include increased EV charging points, LED lighting retrofitting, and an upcoming installation of photo-voltaic (PV) cells on the building's roof for on-site electricity generation.
Beyond its internal initiatives, OS remains dedicated to aiding its diverse clientele in achieving their sustainability targets. Hendley emphasised the global impact of OS's geospatial expertise, citing instances such as supporting urbanisation challenges in Zambia and contributing to Scotland's clean energy identification through GB-wide greenspace data.
With a commitment to sustainability evident in its operations and collaborations, OS stands as a beacon for organisations aspiring to balance environmental responsibility with operational excellence.
