New Report Ranks Major F1 Race Circuits on Eco-Friendly Practices

Comprehensive report rates race circuits on sustainability; top-ranked circuits set the pace for green initiatives in motorsport.

A groundbreaking report, "Racing towards a sustainable future: a review of the disclosed sustainability performance of international racing circuits," has emerged as a pioneering effort to assess and rank major race circuits based on their sustainability endeavors.

Mugello Circuit in Italy secured the top spot, lauded for its attainment of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 20121 certifications, adherence to the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and a prestigious 3 Star FIA Environmental Accreditation. This recognition stems from Mugello's commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability standards within motorsport.

Crafted by Enovation Consulting and Right Hub, the report introduced the Sustainable Circuits Index (SCI), a component of the broader Sustainable Motorsport Index (SMI). The SCI reviews circuits' disclosed sustainability commitments and practices to gauge their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.

Presenting a comprehensive evaluation, the report scrutinised 96 circuits across 21 sustainability criteria encompassing certifications, environmental performance, social impact, and economic contributions. Astonishingly, only a handful of circuits demonstrated robust sustainability practices, with 64 lagging in sustainable disclosures, highlighting the glaring gap between leaders and laggards.

Mugello Circuit stands as a beacon of sustainability, using 100% renewable energy, implementing LED lighting for energy conservation, and deploying rainwater recovery systems for irrigation and sanitary purposes.

Securing the second position, Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona boasts 100% renewable energy sourcing and spearheads social initiatives targeting food waste reduction.

Nonetheless, the report emphasises the urgency for circuits to augment sustainability commitments. It advocates for ambitious long-term strategic plans by 2025, outlining circuits' steadfast dedication to sustainable venue and event management.

The success blueprint involves multifaceted stakeholder engagement encompassing workers, fans, organisers, teams, drivers, sponsors, and the local community. For the motorsport industry to thrive sustainably, collaborative efforts must be orchestrated among diverse stakeholders, fostering a unified vision for eco-friendly motorsport practices.
