DLM Takes the Lead in Engineering Sustainability Initiatives

Dynamic Load Monitoring (DLM) Champions Green Practices and Cultural Change in the Engineering Sector.

Dynamic Load Monitoring (DLM), a pioneering force in the engineering sector, is spearheading a series of initiatives to inspire sustainability, urging the industry to adopt greener practices.

With ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system, DLM serves as a blueprint for sustainable strategies that extend beyond its size, encouraging other businesses to follow suit.

Martin Halford, MD of DLM (UK), expressed the company's commitment to driving cultural and behavioural change, led by a passionate team with a vision for a sustainable future. Collaborating with third parties such as Clever Software Group and True Horizon, DLM embarked on a journey to digitalise operations and introduce innovative sustainability measures.

One notable achievement was the digitalisation of the sales and calibration department, transitioning to entirely paperless processes. DLM also participated in a Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) scheme, partnering with True Horizon for carbon footprint tracking—a move aligning with DLM's ethos of balancing purpose and profit.

Acknowledging initial costs for sustainable practices like recycled and recyclable packaging, Halford emphasised the long-term moral obligation to sustainability. The company incorporated both top-level strategies and smaller behavioural changes, including introducing plants to the office and encouraging lunchtime walks.

The engagement with Southampton University students on an innovation project yielded valuable insights and improvements. Halford highlighted the importance of continuous input and teamwork, likening it to watering plants—nurturing a collective effort for a sustainable future.

While DLM has already witnessed short-term impacts, it remains committed to fostering long-term cultural change within the business and across the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Demonstrating commitment to renewable energy stakeholders, especially in offshore wind projects, is crucial, and DLM believes that sustainability will become a significant factor in future tender situations.

Beyond ISO 14001, DLM anticipates evolving sustainability standards and recognises the business incentives, including favourable consideration in tenders. The company aims to make recruitment easier by appealing to a greener ethos, especially as the younger generation enters the workforce. Halford envisions a dedicated sustainability role within the company and plans to challenge suppliers and partners to join the journey towards a brighter, greener future.
