Gatwick, Tehran, and Munich Incidents Emphasise the Crucial Role of Digital Signage in Business Operations.
Recent digital signage failures at major locations, including London's Gatwick Airport, Tehran's railway station, and a McDonald's in Munich, have underscored the increasing business-critical nature of these systems.
As customer data handling by digital signage becomes more prevalent, ISO 27001 certification is emerging as a requirement for ensuring data security.
In an opening keynote at the Digital Signage Summit Europe in Munich, Florian Rotberg and Stefan Schieker of invidis consulting highlighted the pivotal role digital signage now plays in business operations. The incidents at Gatwick, Tehran, and Munich demonstrated that digital signage is no longer a luxury but a necessity for ensuring smooth operations.
Schieker outlined five key components of a business-critical digital signage solution: vertical insights and process integration, orchestration and DXPs (digital experience platforms), data and backend integration, data privacy and IT security, and remote management and operations. Achieving a unified platform, known as a Digital Experience Platform (DXP), is seen as the ultimate goal, although currently, there are few DXPs that can handle digital signage.
Resistance to change and difficulties in recognising the enhancement potential of digital solutions often impede the integration of digital signage into critical functions. However, as part of the digitalisation process, digital signage naturally becomes business-critical.
The consultancy advocates for the creation of a Digital Signage Experience Platform (DSXP) that handles all digital signage-related interactions and can be linked to larger DXPs. For digital signage to be business-critical, integration with core business platforms is essential, requiring flawless APIs and ISO 27001 certification for data security.
While few software providers currently have ISO 27001 certification, it is increasingly becoming a requirement in larger, more international digital signage tenders. As more customer data is handled by digital signage systems, adherence to data privacy rules is also crucial.
Business-critical digital signage solutions must be failure-proof, with the ability to detect and fix failures instantaneously. Full remote device management capabilities, potentially involving a network operations centre (NOC), become essential for operating a business-critical digital signage network effectively.
