Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport Takes Green Strides with New Energy Plant for Sustainability

Reconstruction Project Elevates Environmental Responsibility, Aiming for Zero Net Emission by 2050.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art energy plant as part of its reconstruction initiative, marking a significant leap towards minimising its environmental impact. The new facility, designed for the production and distribution of heating, cooling, and electricity, adopts eco-friendly energy sources and shifts from heavy fuels to natural gas.

A Crucial Step in VINCI Airports' Environmental Action Plan

This initiative aligns with VINCI Airports' broader environmental action plan for Belgrade, emphasising sustainable business operations with the ambitious target of achieving Zero Net Emission by 2050. The newly operational plant boasts a 44MW heating capacity and incorporates a cutting-edge trigeneration system.

Increased Capacity, Reduced Carbon Footprint

With a 25% boost in total heating capacity, the airport not only meets the thermal energy needs of its existing customers but also anticipates the requirements of future development. The transition from heavy fuels to natural gas results in a commendable 25% reduction in the airport's carbon footprint, equivalent to curbing 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Efficiency Through Innovation

The innovative trigeneration system, coupled with a smart building management system, optimises energy consumption based on outdoor temperatures. Francois Berisot, CEO of Belgrade Airport, highlighted the multifaceted benefits, stating, "The new power plant not only decreases environmental impact but also provides significant savings and optimises the use of available natural resources."

Commitment to Environmental Standards

Belgrade Airport's commitment to environmental sustainability is underscored by its participation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme (ACA). In December 2020, it achieved Level 1 certification, signifying the first positive result since joining the VINCI Airports network. The airport continues its trajectory towards sustainable practices with a 1MW solar power plant, two solid waste processing plants, and a wastewater treatment plant in their final stages.

Concluding Belgrade's Transformation

Parallel to these sustainable projects, extensive modernisation and reconstruction efforts are underway at Nikola Tesla Airport. Backed by VINCI Airports' global expertise, the parent company aims to enhance growth and deliver additional value to passengers and partners throughout the concession project.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport stands at the forefront of environmental stewardship, turning its commitment into action as it paves the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
